A shepherd's cottage in New Zealand epitomizes the image of an idyllic rural retreat.  Located about two hours southeast of Christchurch on Banks Peninsula, the picturesque dwelling is part of "Annandale," a working sheep farm.  The century old structure recently underwent a complete renovation and is now a vacation rental.

Simple in form, the gabled farmhouse cottage is anchored by a large brick chimney.  A full width porch with a shed roof extends across the front.

The cozy cottage features an open floor plan with approximately 990 square feet of living space on two levels.  Echoing the porch, the sitting or living room stretches the width of the cottage.  An inviting fireplace provides a focal point and gathering area at one end.  The kitchen and 3/4 bath are nestled within a lean-to extending across the back.

Tucked beneath the roof, a single bedroom occupies Level 2.  Exposed wood framing and plank flooring lend warmth and character only time can bestow.

The small farmhouse plan encompasses 1,500 square feet of living space on two floors.  Level 1 features an open interior with combined kitchen, living and dining areas.  A kitchen pantry, powder room and mud room also occupy the main level.

Level 2 includes three bedrooms with full bath and a laundry closet off the stair hall.

A farmhouse cottage from Yankee Barn Homes features a full width front porch and charming cupola atop a metal-clad roof.    A one and a half story post and beam structure, "Craftsbury Cottage" boasts 1,713 square feet of living area on two levels.  Large windows on the gable ends flood the interior with natural light.

On Level 1, the kitchen and dining areas flow into a Great Room with fireplace and soaring cathedral ceiling.  A screen porch off the dining area provides a nice transition from indoors to out.  At right, the master bedroom suite includes a large walk-in closet.

Craftsbury Cottage: Level 1

Upstairs, a balcony overlooks the Great Room below and leads to a sleeping loft.  Sliding doors with an arched transom open to a small outdoor deck.  A closet and three quarter bath complete this level.
